Steam bath: what is it and how does it differ from the sauna?

The steam bath is a closed room in which a steam generator creates a warm and highly humid environment. The main difference from the sauna is the combination of temperature and humidity: in a classic steam bath, the air is more humid, while in a Finnish sauna the temperature is higher and the air is usually drier.

If you are planning a spa holiday in Velingrad, knowing these differences will help you choose an experience that suits you. Kashmir Wellness & SPA Hotel There are various steam baths and saunas that you can include in your stay according to your preferences and tolerance to heat.

What is a steam bath?

Unlike dry rooms with wooden cladding, a steam bath usually has surfaces made of ceramics, mosaics, glass ceramics, or stone. There are seating areas inside, and the steam fills the space and creates the characteristic feeling of moist warmth.

The classic steam bath operates at a temperature of about 45°C and a relative humidity close to 100%. These are guidelines for the type of room; the specific settings depend on the facility. Check the information panel and the instructions of the SPA team before entering.

Lower temperature does not necessarily mean a lighter workload. With high humidity, sweat evaporates more easily and the heat can be felt intensely. Therefore, personal comfort is a more useful guide than comparing temperatures alone.

Steam bath or sauna: what are the main differences?

When comparing a steam bath and a sauna, we most often refer to the classic steam bath and the Finnish sauna. Infrared and other types of saunas have their own characteristics.

Steam bath

Temperature usually around 45°C

Very high humidity,
close to 100%

The steam is supplied by a steam generator

Moisture-resistant cladding and damp heat

Finnish sauna

Higher temperature, often around 80°C

Usually low humidity

The air is heated with a stove and stones

Usually wooden cladding and dry heat

In the sauna, humidity temporarily increases when water is poured over the heated stones according to the facility’s regulations. In the steam room, high humidity is a key characteristic of the environment. Neither experience is universally more suitable for everyone.

How does the first visit to a steam bath go?

1. Familiarize yourself with the instructions

Read the usage rules, recommended stay, and clothing requirements. If you are not sure how the specific steam room works, ask an employee. Do not change the settings or add your own oils or other products.

2. Prepare calmly

Take a shower and use the appropriate spa-area accessories. Leave your phone and items not intended for a humid environment outside the room. Make time for rest instead of planning the visit between two quick tasks.

3. Start with a short stay

On your first visit, spend just a few minutes feeling how you react to the humid heat. Sit comfortably and don't try to last the selected time beforehand. The maximum stay indicated on the sign is not a goal you should reach.

4. Monitor your feelings

Get out immediately if you experience dizziness, weakness, nausea, difficulty breathing, or any other discomfort. Do not stay inside to complete the “full session.” If the symptoms do not subside, seek help from the team.

5. Cool down gradually

After exiting, let the body cool down calmly and drink water. Take a break in the relaxation area. The sudden transition to very cold water is not a mandatory part of the visit and is not an appropriate choice for everyone.

What to expect from the steam bath?

The steam bath is first and foremost a thermal spa experience. For people who enjoy a humid environment, it can be a pleasant part of their leisure time. During the visit, you can experience:

  • warm and humid air;
  • warming of the skin;
  • drops of moisture on the body;
  • sweating and the need for cooling;
  • a desire for a relaxing vacation after leaving.

The steam bath is not a method for permanent weight loss; sweating does not prove “detoxification”. The potential short-term change in weight is associated with fluid loss. It is most sensible to view it as part of a relaxation break, without any expectations of treatment.

How to prepare for a steam bath?

A few simple habits will make the visit more relaxed:

  • drink water and avoid getting dehydrated;
  • Do not use the steam room after using alcohol;
  • take a shower before entering;
  • adhere to the requirements regarding clothing and hygiene;
  • plan a break after the heat experience;
  • ask the team about sensitivity to fragrances.

With heart disease, problems with blood pressure, pregnancy, or any other condition that can be affected by heat, first discuss the visit with a doctor. If you are ill or feel unwell,

Can we combine a steam bath and a sauna?

Combining is a matter of individual tolerance and the rules of the spa center. On your first visit, it is easier to choose a thermal room, take a break, and assess how you feel. You do not need to go through all the facilities within one day.

To combine with a pool or massage, ask the SPA team about the order of visits. Leave enough time for rest between them.
